Alternative study arrangements for class-based students

These are certainly challenging times for us all.  We hope that our staff, students, their families and loved ones are keeping safe and well.  Everyone from the team here at Phillips want to assure you that we are working hard to minimise disruptions to your study and that we will continue to provide the best possible support for you on your learning journey.

Temporary suspension of classes

Like other training organisations, and in line with government recommendations in order to maximize protection of the community’s health, we have decided to temporarily suspend class-based delivery until further notice.  Class-based training has been suspended at all 12 locations across Victoria from Monday 23 March 2020.  At this stage, we expect a minimum of one month for this period, but it is possible that it may be up to three months duration.

Alternative training arrangements

We are rapidly preparing for your class content to be delivered to you via distance learning.  We are aiming to have that ready to roll-out within the week.  In the meantime, we expect that you will continue to study and to keep to your normal routine as much as possible.  Here is more information about how you can continue to receive your learning and assessment materials and keep in touch with your trainer until normal classes resume.

How will I receive my learning and assessment materials?

We intend to provide you with the same resources that you would normally receive in class, but because we know that not everyone has access to a reliable printer or computer at home, we are offering you two alternatives.  Please note, we are no longer offering an option for students to come to head office to collect resources.

You may choose to receive your resources by either:

  1. By post to your address:  we will send the next two units by parcel post to your home address; or
  2. By email:  digital copies of the same learning and assessment resources sent to your email as attachments; you will need to organise your own assessment workbook printing, or complete the assessments digitally.

If you are currently enrolled for classes, you should receive an email asking for the response – please complete the survey as soon as possible.

How do I complete and submit my finished assessment workbook?

  • If you have a printed assessment workbook, you should hand-write your answers then make a scanned or printed copy to keep before submitting the original by dropping it into the after hours letterbox (on right hand side of building in the car park laneway just behind the boom gate) or by posting to Phillips Institute, 75A Koornang Road, Carnegie, Victoria 3163;
  • If you have a digital copy received via email and have chosen not to print the assessment workbook, you should complete your responses in the digital document using Word or PDF, make a copy when completed and save with a new filename then return the copy to

Staff available for guidance and support

Your trainers will still be available during your usual scheduled class times ready to provide guidance and support.  Once we have organised the delivery of the next few resources for all students, we are planning some scheduled webinars as an alternative to your face-to-face classes.  You may schedule appointments for telephone calls with your trainer for individual support, or we may use an online meeting tool such as Skype or Zoom for group chat sessions – this will be confirmed in the next few days.  Please be aware that we are transitioning over 500 students during this time so we ask that you be patient.  Our student services team will be available as usual during office hours to help ensure a smooth experience with minimal interruptions to your studies during this time.

What about skills training and assessment?

Class-based students learn with group-based discussions, role plays and skills training on relevant equipment using industry-realistic scenarios, simulations and industry resources.  As we are not able to conduct this aspect of your training at present, we will provide further updates on alternative arrangements for this component of your training and assessment.  It may be necessary to defer this part of your training until placement, or we may be able to provide alternative arrangements such as video if appropriate.  Please check this page regularly for updates.

Can I still do my placement?

Most students are currently still able to continue with their placements, depending on host placement organisations.  Some placement organisations, such as a number of aged care facilities, have put a temporary hold on accepting new placement students, however we encourage you to persist with your studies so that you will be ready to commence placement when this situation changes.  We will notify you immediately if there are any changes to existing placement arrangements.
